How To: My Perfect Braid-out

Saturday is my day for running errands and my go-to casual styles for these days are either a high bun or a braid-out. Well today it was braid-out day as I'm now 10.5 weeks post. I tend to go for a bun earlier on in the stretch when the edges show a little more cooperation.

HOTD - Braid-out

I think I pretty much have my routine for braid-outs down pat by now and so I'll share it with you.

How to:

  • Start with moisturized and sealed hair which is a little damp. I used the combo below:
water, HEHH, and EVOO for braid-out prep

  • Braid hair in 2 or 4 sections
  • Add a device which will curl the ends of the hair (I use straws and hair-pins.)
  • Let dry overnight.
  • Unravel braids when hair is slightly damp, fluff minimally to separate, apply a serum and leave hair alone!

How to - braid-out

I know many advise against undoing braids for a braid-out when wet or damp, but a big part of the routine for me is unraveling the hair while slightly damp. It gives it fullness and volume. The caveat though, is that after the initial fluffing/ separation, DO NOT manipulate, or the hair will end up frizzy. If left alone, the hair will dry as is, giving you the perfect look.

braid-out at the end of the day

Above is my hair at the end of the day. It did not frizz too much and it maintained much of the curl pattern. If I wanted to rock it the next day, I'd repeat the aforementioned steps without combing through the hair.

What is your secret to great braid-out?

  6. Your braid out is fabulous! I've tried that style once, but because of my layers I found it to look a bit akward...maybe I'll give it another try at some point this year...
