Oil it up - Castor Oil

I am tempted to call this the king of all natural oils. After all, I've never seen a grapeseed oil or jojoba oil challenge, but there are plenty of castor oil challenges around. As a matter of fact, I think there is at least one taking place right now, check this link for more details.

So, why all the hype surrounding castor oil?
Well, it has been used since ancient Egyptian times for beautification purposes. The oil contains a plethora of minerals plus fatty acids which are vital for the growing of healthy hair. Castor oil is a clear, thick oil that is chock full of nutrients. It is derived from pressed castor bean seeds (Ricinus Communis).

Castor oil contains vitamin E, omega 6 essential fatty acids, and other minerals and nutrients which assist in the growth of healthy, luscious hair. Castor oil is an anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory agent which works to prevent or treat the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi.

Castor oil benefits:

•Improves circulation to the scalp and the uptake of nutrients thus stimulating hair growth
•Nourishes the hair and hair follicles
•Encourages the growth of thick hair
•Prevents thinning
•Treats premature balding and hair loss
•Moisturizes the hair and scalp
•Treats dandruff and dry scalp
•Prevents the growth of bacteria and fungi
•Prevents and treats split ends and hair breakage
•Darkens the hair
•Softens the hair
•Makes the hair shiny

(Wow that was a mouthful!)

Uses:

  1. To massage the scalp
  2. As a sealant
  3. In your pre-poo
  4. As an added ingredient to your deep conditioner

Despite all the wonderful things that castor oil brings, there are a few negatives:
  • This oil can be quite thick, sticky and difficult to spread. Try combining it with another carrier oil to make it thinner and easier to apply to your hair and scalp.
  • Some find the smell of castor oil to be less than pleasant. Adding a few drops of your favorite essential oil will sweeten this treat.

  1. Castor oil is by far my favorite oil! I use it for everything from keeping my new growth soft and moisturized to sealing my ends. I normally dilute it with grapeseed oil. I'm considering adding it to my deep conditioner. Great post!

  2. I've become attached to Jamaican black castor oil. I use it for scalp massages, I apply it to the perimeter of my hairline, and sometimes seal my ends with it. I use a little peppermint essential oil in it to give it some umph and for the fragrance. I definitely agree that this is the king of all natural oils.

    1. You know I've never used JBCO. I've heard great things about it though.
